Being that Brazil is a top Greenhouse gas emitter from deforestation, slowing down the rate in some areas is a huge step forward for environmentalists. Although there was a rise in deforestation in some Brazilian states in 2011, the two states mentioned in the article, Mato Grosso and Para, had impressive declines in deforestation (31% and 44%). This shows that with the help of the government taking more of an initiative, the target of reducing deforestation to 3.925 square km by 2020 is very possible.
